As this is Suicide Prevention Month, and Suicide Prevention Day was a few days ago, I wanted to acknowledge that suicide prevention and mental health is something that should be talked about and acknowledged any day. But, given this
month and day of awareness, I was inspired to create a blog post focusing on mental health and resources for treatment, especially hoping to focus on treatment for those who can’t afford out of pocket expenses or whose insurance doesn’t cover what they need. Mental health access is something that should be available for everyone, and I truly appreciate the multiple organizations that focus on providing awareness, resources, and more. Here I will be providing different resources and organizations that help with mental health and provide some form of access to treatments or help. I will also provide links to other posts about this same topic for you to be able to have an expansive list of resources.
This website, Health-line (not sponsored or affiliated) created a list of ways to find therapy depending on what you need / your budget – “Therapy for Every Budget: How to Access It” . They go into detail about where to go to find certain types of therapists that fit your budget. They also share some apps, support group resources, and hotlines. I will briefly summarize some resources they described here, but please check out their article for the full list of resources and full descriptions.
These are the different forms of affordable options they suggest based on budgets, lack of insurance coverage, etc.:
- Sliding scale therapists
- Free / low-income mental health services
- This website provides links to different resources to help you track and find Mental Health Clinics that offer free / low-cost services
They also discuss different apps:
- TalkSpace ($65 per week)
- Betterhelp ($35-$85 per week)
Again, they do discuss more options and provide further descriptions and resources, so definitely check out the site for more information.
Providing similar information as Healthline, the ADAA (Anxiety and Depression Association of America) provided mental health treatment options for those on a budget ( federally funded clinics, or requesting sliding costs based on income) – “Low-Cost Treatment” . This article, however, also provides information regarding medications – companies that provide assistance to those uninsured. They provide links to the patient-assistant program pages and to applications. This post also provides trackers for finding therapists and federally funded health centers.
Here is another blog post by the ADAA that provides more ways to get therapy on a budget: “7 Ways to Seek Therapy Without Breaking the Bank” , in which they provide advice from taking advantage of free access to school counseling (if your school / university provide that), support groups, hotlines, and more.
Here are a few resources that I have discovered with a quick description as to how they can help:
- NAMI – National Alliance on Mental Illness
- Free access to support groups & educational resources / opportunities
- The Summit Counseling Center
- Offer clinical services, they offer clinical groups (group therapy opportunities), clinical programs (providing opportunities for different forms of therapy), and talks and workshops.
- If you click the “events” tab, you can stay up to date on the different clinical and community opportunities
- The Trevor Project
- Focuses in LGBTQ+ community
- Information about suicide prevention, community resources (networking for the LGBTQ+ community, volunteer opportunities, and more), crisis prevention (hotline, text lines, messaging – confidential of course)
- Therapy For Black Girls
- Mental health space, specialized for girls and women
- They have a blog, a podcast, and help you find a therapist
- Black Men Heal
- Offer 8 free psychotherapy sessions with people of color (currently, the application is closed but there is a waiting list you can join) and Group therapy
- Training / consultations
MEDITATION RESOURCES YOU DON’T NEED TO SPLURGE ON
- The meditation app suggested to me by my therapist – Insight Timer (Most meditation apps I have found have a lot of limitations when you don’t pay, while Insight Timer still had an amazing selection without payment)
- YouTube for meditation – I have listened to many meditations on YouTube.
